Cannabis & Endometriosis
Endometriosis and Endocannabinoids
The Endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a group of cannabinoid receptors found in the human body. These receptors are found in endometrial tissue and studies show that the ECS level are regulated by the menstrual cycle. In women with Endometriosis the ECS is disrupted. There are many things in our everyday lives that aren’t good for us. Toxins such as Dioxin decrease our CB1 levels in the endometrial tissue. Toxins in the air, water, grass and food all contribute to the growth of Endometriosis.
Endocannabinoids fit into a specific sites on the surface of a cell much like a key fits into a lock. Once the connection is made the Endocannabinoids give a chemical signal to the cell. The signal tells the cell what to do. The ECS controls tons of body functions including your mood, sleep, reproduction, metabolism, movement, pain and immune response. There are two cannabinoid receptors known as CB1 and CB2. A chemical similar to that of the structure of THC is found in the uterus. Endometriosis has been linked to endocannabinoid deficiency, in this disease there are lower levels of the CB1 receptors in the endometrial tissue. Reduced ECS function can lead to growth of Endometriosis. An imbalance of the ECS could contribute to the growth as well. Endometriosis pain is medicated through the CB1 receptor.
