I started in a sex study at Queen's university here in Kingston. The study is focusing on Provoked vestibulodynia. Provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) is a common chronic genital pain condition affecting approximately 12% of pre-menopausal women. Although parallels have been drawn between PVD and neuropathic pain (NP), no studies have examined self-reported NP characteristics in PVD. This study was lookng to see how your spinal cord and brain stem to see how those areas receive pain. I only made it past the gynecological exam. In this exam the touch areas of the genital area and have you rate your pain between a one and ten. One being the lowest and ten the highest. Had I gone past this part I would have completed a bunch of questionnaires online. After those you would be booked for an fMRI session at the university MRI facility. In the fMRI session they would have attached an electrode to my hand and used heat to see how your spinal cord and brain and proceeding the pain from the different levels of heat. Validated NP questionnaires can be useful for doctors who need a better way to assess symptoms of patients with PVP and further research should be done to better treat this condition.
